International Students

Students who would like to enroll at any of the UW-Platteville campuses (UW-Platteville or UW-Platteville Baraboo Sauk County) under an educational visa may apply as an international student. Students applying to UW-Platteville Online will not be issued an I-20, therefore are not eligible for an educational visa.  

International Admission Guidelines

International student applicants meeting the following requirements can be considered for admission to any of the UW-Platteville campuses: 

  • Proof of secondary school completion
  • Strong academic achievements, comparable to other UW-Platteville applicants, especially in the areas of mathematics, natural science (chemistry, biology or physics), social sciences and the humanities
  • Adequate financial resources for academic program of study
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English  (international transfer students currently attending U.S. colleges or universities may demonstrate competence in English through courses taken at such institutions when grades of “B” or higher have been earned in English composition courses and speech)

English Proficiency Requirements (Bachelor's Degree)

  • TOEFL iBT composite score of 64 (minimum sub-scores: reading 15; listening 15; speaking 17; writing 17)
  • IELTS composite score of 5.5 (minimum sub-scores: reading 5.0; listening 5.0; speaking 5.0; writing 5.0)
  • Official PTE with a minimum score of 46
  • Official Duolingo with a minimum score of 95
  • Official ACT score with an English sub score of 18
  • Official SAT score with an Evidence-based Reading and Writing sub score of 480
  • GTEC score of 1100 (computer-based format)
  • Successful completion of Wisconsin ESL Institute (WESLI) level 700 courses and a letter of recommendation of English language proficiency from WESLI staff/instructor

English Proficiency Requirements (Associate Degree)

  • TOEFL iBT composite score of 61
  • IELTS composite score of 5.5
  • Official PTE with a minimum score of 46
  • Official Duolingo with a minimum score of 95
  • Official ACT score with an English sub score of 18
  • Official SAT score with an Evidence-based Reading and Writing sub score of 480
  • GTEC score of 1100 (computer-based format)
  • iTEP composite score of 4.0
  • Successful completion of Wisconsin ESL Institute (WESLI) level 700 courses and a letter of recommendation of English language proficiency from WESLI staff/instructor

Students may also meet their English proficiency requirement at any of the UW-Platteville campuses if they have graduated from a secondary school in specific countries where English is the official language of education. 

International Application Procedure

To be considered for admission to any of the UW-Platteville campuses, international students must provide the following:

  1. University of Wisconsin System application (https://apply.wisconsin.edu/)
  2. Official academic records from all secondary and higher education institutions attended
    1. For review and decision purposes only, we will accept unofficial international academic records. If you receive an admission decision and choose to attend UW-Platteville, all final and official academic records MUST be provided prior to, or upon arrival to campus.  Alternatively, academic records can be mailed directly from the schools attended to the UW-Platteville Office of Admission
    2. Academic records must be in the original language along with a certified English translation.
      • All academic records should include the dates of attendance, level of study, list of subjects, school leaving marks (grades) earned, rank in class (when possible) and the grading system used
      • Official records should include all exam or test results and certificates, diplomas or degrees earned. All of these requirements are mandatory and must be official documents.
      • Photocopies of official records are acceptable if an authorized university, government or public official has certified them after the documents have been copied.
  3. Non-refundable application fee (if applicable)
  4. Evidence of English proficiency (see above for specific requirements)
  5. Statement of activities (work, armed services, etc.) for the period of time they have chosen not to attend a college or university for a semester or more

In addition to the items outlined above, students seeking transfer credit must also supply the following documentation:

Transfer Credit outside of United States
  • International students requesting transfer credit are required to submit an official One Earth, World Education Services or Educational Credential Evaluators Inc. course-by-course evaluation, completed at the student's request and at the student's expense. Other credential evaluation agencies may be used if they are current NACES members.  Please confirm with the Office of Admission if using an agency other than those listed to confirm it will be accepted.  
  • The completed course-by-course evaluation must be submitted to the Office of Admission prior to enrolling in classes at UW-Platteville
  • Submit detailed course descriptions in both the original language and English. If acceptable course descriptions are not submitted, transfer credit will not be awarded. 
Transfer Credit in United States
  • Official transcript(s) from all colleges or universities previously attended or currently attending, as well as any college-level or post-secondary coursework (transcripts must come directly from the institution attended to the UW-Platteville Office of Admission). 
  • Copy of the applicant's current I-20 or DS-2019
  • Copy of the applicant's visa
  • Complete and submit the UW-Platteville International Student Transfer Clearance FormNote: student may submit this to the International Student and Scholar Services Office at isss@uwplatt.edu after being admitted. This form is not required prior to admission.

Post-admission and prior to I-20 issuance, students will be required to submit:

  1. Affidavit of financial support, documenting ability to meet all financial obligations for duration of study at a UW-Platteville campus, signed by parent, sponsor or governmental agency (all financial support documents must be dated within six months of the intended program start date)
    1. Complete and submit the UW-Platteville Financial Verification Form
    2. Original bank statement (total balance must be converted to USD)
  2. Copy of applicant's passport

International Application deadlines

To be considered for admission, international admission applications must be received by the following dates:

April 30 for applicants seeking Fall term entry (September–December)

November 1 for applicants seeking Spring term entry (January–May)
